Distribution
Widespread across cool temperate and subarctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere: most of Europe (UK, Ireland, Netherlands, Germany, Scandinavia, France, Spain), Russia, India, Pacific Northwest USA, Northeastern North America, Peru, Chile. Most widespread psilocybin species in Europe.
Habitat
Saprobic grassland mushroom. Found in unimproved acidic pastures, parkland, upland grazing areas, hillsides, meadows (especially wet, south-facing fields). Often associated with sheep and cattle pastures but does NOT grow directly on dung. Prefers decaying grass roots.
Season
Late summer through autumn (August to November in Europe). Peak season is September-October. In some mild climates, can persist into early winter. Fruits after heavy rainfall. In spring, a small secondary flush may occur.

Symptoms
Nausea, dilated pupils, increased heart rate, muscle weakness, drowsiness. Misidentified lookalike species may cause upset stomach, vomiting, and anxiety attacks. Generally well-tolerated physically at appropriate doses.

Often described as more 'natural' and 'earthy' experience compared to P. cubensis. Emotional amplification, enhanced creativity, introspection. At high doses: mystical experiences, ego dissolution. Timeline: Effects begin 20-45 minutes after ingestion, peak at 1.5-2.5 hours, total duration 4-6 hours. Often described as cleaner and more focused than other species.
