Northern Hemisphere, widespread on decaying conifer wood. Multiple fatal poisonings in Japan (2004).

Habitat

Saprotrophic on dead conifer wood, especially spruce and fir.

Season

Late summer to autumn.

Toxin Type

Pleurocybellazetidine

Symptoms

Causes acute encephalopathy in patients with renal impairment. Novel toxin pleurocybellazetidine causes brain edema and seizures. 2004 outbreak in Japan killed 19 people.
