Europe, particularly France and Mediterranean regions. Also recorded in parts of North America (West Coast). Widespread but uncommon.

Habitat

Woodland edges, grassy areas, gardens, and disturbed ground. Saprotrophic decomposer. Similar habitat to other small deadly Lepiotas.

Season

Late summer through autumn.

Toxin Type

Amatoxins

Symptoms

Overview: Amatoxin poisoning syndrome, identical to other deadly Lepiotas. Phase 1 Latent Period: 8-24 hours post-ingestion. Phase 2 Gastrointestinal: Severe abdominal pain, vomiting, profuse diarrhea, dehydration. Phase 3 False Recovery: Temporary improvement with ongoing hepatic destruction. Phase 4 Hepatic Failure: Liver necrosis, renal failure, multi-organ failure, death within 3-7 days without treatment. Mechanism: RNA polymerase II inhibition by amatoxins.
