Distribution

East Asia: Japan, Korea, China. Found in mixed forests, responsible for majority of fatal mushroom poisonings in the region.

Habitat

Ectomycorrhizal with Fagaceae (Castanopsis, Quercus, Lithocarpus). Common in subtropical and temperate mixed forests.

Season

Summer to autumn (June-October).

Toxin Type

Amatoxins

Symptoms

Amatoxin poisoning identical to A. phalloides. Accounts for over 50% of fatal mushroom poisonings in China and Japan. Liver transplantation may be required.
