Distribution
Circumboreal distribution across the Northern Hemisphere. Native to boreal and temperate forests of Siberia, Scandinavia, Europe, North America, and parts of Asia (Japan). Also recorded in Mexico. Introduced to Australia, New Zealand, and South America via tree plantations.
Habitat
Ectomycorrhizal with both coniferous and deciduous trees. Primarily associated with birch (Betula), pine (Pinus), spruce (Picea), fir (Abies), and larch (Larix). Thrives in coniferous woodlands, boreal forests, and acidic soils. Accumulates metals from upper soil layers.
Season
July through November. Peak fruiting in July-August and November. Spring and summer specimens contain up to 10 times more toxins than autumn specimens. Typical cap yields approximately 6 mg muscimol and up to 70 mg ibotenic acid.

Symptoms
Onset within 30 minutes to 2-3 hours post-ingestion. Initial phase: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and gastrointestinal distress. Neurological phase: confusion, vertigo, myoclonus (muscle jerking), distorted perception of time and space, miosis (pupil constriction). Severe cases may involve tonic-clonic seizures. Physical symptoms include drowsiness, sweating, salivation, and loss of equilibrium.
Hallucinogenic Effects
The excitatory phase produces sensations of warmth, tingling, restlessness, and floating sensations. Visual and auditory hallucinations occur, including distortion of perceived size of objects (macropsia and micropsia, sometimes called 'Alice in Wonderland syndrome'). Altered perception of time and space, euphoria, and vivid dream-like states. This is followed by a deep comatose sleep with vivid dreams. Upon waking, retrograde amnesia is common, and subjects often report a subjective sense of 'rebirth'. Traditional Siberian shamanic use: held sacred status and integral to shamanic rites across Siberian peoples (Koryak, Chukchi, Evenki). Practitioners engaged in secondary intoxication by consuming the urine of humans or reindeer who had ingested the mushroom, as metabolites remain psychoactive after passage. Used for spiritual journeys, divination, and healing ceremonies. Also used traditionally in some parts of Afghanistan and among certain Hindu sects.
