Distribution

Europe, widespread in deciduous and mixed forests. Also found in parts of North Africa and Western Asia.

Habitat

Mycorrhizal with oak, beech, and other broadleaf trees. Prefers calcareous soils in warm deciduous forests.

Season

Spring to early summer (April-July), earlier than most deadly Amanitas.

Symptoms

Classic amatoxin poisoning: 6-24 hour latent period followed by severe gastrointestinal distress, liver and kidney failure. Without treatment, mortality rate exceeds 50%.
